WHAT MUSIC IS IT?
The music can best be described as jazz & blues inspired renditions of classic German Christmas songs. It is an innovative blend of recognizable content, elaborate form and rare instrumentation that can be enjoyed as background music as well as for active listening purposes.
WHO IS MOST LIKELY TO ENJOY THIS CD?
People open to a sophisticated musical approach to traditional song material should appreciate it. Both, connoisseurs of German Christmas melodies, and lovers of genuine American music styles will not be disappointed.
WHAT MAKES THIS CD SPECIAL
For starters, thanks to the sophisticated piano arrangement and exciting rhythms the harmonica finds it easy to avoid the folksy cliché connected with its use at Christmas time. We want people to note clear jazz and blues influences in both our instruments with the original material maintaining the upper hand. The vitality of our improvisational energy is intended to enhance the wealth and beauty of the musical heritage for today and tomorrow. In this we like to think the CD stands out quite a bit. It is also unique in its approach of finding the right balance between easily consumable music and artistic integrity.
PRODUCING GERMAN-AMERICAN MUSIC
The idea of combining American musical genres with traditional German Christmas songs fits us both very well. After all, we were both born and raised in Germany, where we developed a passion for jazz & blues, and have lived in the U. S. for many years.
PRODUCED IN CHICAGO
There are few cities in America that have had such a huge influence on the development of jazz & blues as Chicago. Sensitive creative musicians cannot escape the city's genius loci.
HOW THIS CD CAME ABOUT
One of the greatest things about American born music such as jazz and blues is their liberalizing force. American musical arrangers and musicians love to exploit these opportunities, and apply this universe of improvisation to their own traditional songs. For example, just listen to some of the many jazz influenced renditions of the Star Spangled Banner. With regard to traditional and serious music German arrangers have been somewhat more reluctant. After the persuasive recording of the German National Anthem with Herbert Quelle, I started to think about other possibilities. On Christmas 2017, it finally came to me. For a very long time I wanted to produce a Christmas CD. This is the result.
